DAY 15: PAST SIMPLE VS. PAST CONTINUOUS

New day, new tense! We have learn about PRESENT simple & continuous before and now is time to learn about the PAST version of them.

As we all know, we use this tense to talk about COMPLETED STATES & ACTIONS in the past. We usually mention the time, such as:

  • Yesterday, I went to the dentist.
  • I was not shy when I was little.
  • We walked together at the park last weekend.

We use this tense to talk about ACTIONS that were in progress (not finished) at a specific time in the PAST. For example:

  • I was cooking noodles last night at 8.

We can also use it to talk about ONGOING ACTIONS that got interrupted with another. The other one is usually in PAST SIMPLE:

  • I was walking when a dog chased me.

In this tense, we use WERE/WAS + V-ing:

(+) He was calling his mom yesterday at 1.

(-) He was not calling his mom yesterday at 1.

(?) Was he calling his mom yesterday at 1?

Congrats for unlocking another tense! Let’s practice it together often so we can get used to and be good at it. Happy learning, Gems!
