VERB-ING

When we talk about preferences (the things that we like/dislike), we can use these PREFERENCE VERBS with the NOUNS:

However, if we want to talk about ACTIVITIES that we like/dislike, we have to turn that VERB to VERB-ING:

The most common mistake that we make is using VERB 1 after the PREFERENCE VERBS:

  • I like play video games. ❌ ➡️ I like playing video games. ✅
  • I hate eat vegetables. ❌ ➡️ I hate eating vegetables. ✅

So far, we have learned about how to say our HABITS & ROUTINES using VERB 1. Now, we are going to learn about the usage of VERB-ING:

We use VERB-ING to talk about things happening right now at the moment. We have to always use ARE/AM/IS before the VERB-ING. For example;

  • (+) You are reading this sentence right now.
  • (-) We are not learning English together.
  • (?) Is she going to the store now?

Other than that, we also use the same sentence pattern to talk about things that we are doing THESE DAYS/LATELY (akhir-akhir ini/belakangan ini):

What are you doing these days? Let’s make your own examples and do the quiz. Good luck, Gems!
